River level

River level integration coming for this stretch.

The lowdown

  • This is town-centre Severn water with a semi-rural feel creeping in around the edges. A handy mix rather than wild, remote river fishing.
  • The club controls much of the river upstream from Dolerw Park footbridge, so this is the key access area to get your head around before setting off.
  • It’s mixed game and coarse fishing, with brown trout, grayling, chub, dace and roach all named for the water. Salmon are named too.
  • Expect proper river fishing rather than a tidy commercial-style setup. Look for the crease, steadier glides and any softer water around the margins.
  • Trotting is the obvious starting point when the river’s carrying a nice bit of pace. A light float and maggots or casters should put you in the game for dace, roach and chub.
  • When the river pushes through or colours up, a feeder approach can make more sense. Fish the near crease and hunt out steadier depth rather than battling the main flow.
  • Game anglers will be looking at the trout and grayling side of things, while the coarse fishing gives you plenty to go at when conditions suit.
  • Dolerw Park and the town-centre setting make this a relatively accessible bit of river, but don’t assume every bank or swim is fishable without checking the club position.
  • There’s no published club-water length or peg count, so treat it as a wander-and-find-water session. A bit of walking could be well worth the faff.
  • Fachwen Pool is also run by the club, but it’s separate stillwater. Don’t confuse it with this River Severn stretch when sorting your ticket.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: Trotting the glides and crease is a bob-on way to start for dace, roach and chub. If the flow is up, switch to a feeder and work the steadier water; game anglers can target the trout and grayling water appropriately.
