The lowdown
- The Mochdre water sits between Mochdre and Newtown town bridge, giving you a handy mix of open valley river and town-centre Severn.
- Club control runs upstream from the Dolerw Park footbridge in Newtown, so that footbridge is a useful landmark when getting your bearings.
- This is mixed coarse and game water. Brown trout and grayling are on the cards, alongside chub, dace, roach and salmon.
- Local listings also name perch, pike, gudgeon and bream for the Mochdre/Newtown water. A decent spread of species, then.
- The club water is near the Mochdre Brook confluence, a cheeky feature worth clocking up when you’re reading the flow and looking for a crease.
- Expect a generally rural character around Mochdre, changing to a more urban river corridor as you work towards Newtown.
- The stretch is in the upper Severn valley, so keep an eye on the pace and depth. There should be varied water rather than one flat, uniform run.
- For methods, the mixed nature of the water lends itself to trotting and light feeder work for the coarse fish, with game-fishing approaches where conditions suit.
- A bit of colour and fresh flow can really bring the river alive. In steadier conditions, pick out glides, the crease and any depth around cover.
- Exact beat limits and peg numbers aren’t published, so use the Dolerw Park footbridge, Mochdre and the town bridge as your main reference points. Night-fishing policy isn’t clearly stated.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Trotting and feeder fishing are the obvious coarse approaches, while fly or other suitable game methods can come into play for brown trout and grayling. Read the flow, find the depth and work the crease around the brook confluence.

Key rules
- A valid Environment Agency rod licence is required in addition to fishery permission.
Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
