The Albrighton — SAC

The Albrighton is a several-hundred-yard Severn section at Shrewsbury, now part of Shrewsbury Anglers Club’s river portfolio. It’s a dead-straight bit of river, shallow up top and deeper downstream, with gravel bed and streamer weed along the banks.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • The upstream limit starts where the Shrewsbury Town Fishery at Sydney Avenue finishes.
  • A concrete culvert marks the top boundary. The venue sits on the left-hand bank here.
  • From there, the section runs downstream for several hundred yards — plenty of water to explore.
  • The bottom boundary is by the garden of the first bankside house, where it adjoins The Royce section.
  • The river is described as dead straight through the stretch, so it’s easy enough to get your bearings.
  • The upper water is relatively shallow, with streamer weed along the banks. That should give the swim a bit of character rather than leaving it totally featureless.
  • Further down, the river becomes deeper. Worth bearing in mind when choosing between the shallower upper water and the deeper lower end.
  • The riverbed is gravel for much of the venue, giving the section a firm-looking natural base.
  • SAC says the pegs need re-establishing or substantial work. The water is described as neglected, so expect a venue that needs a bit of graft rather than a polished commercial-style fishery.
  • Wading is allowed, but it’s firmly down to the angler’s own safety. SAC also advises parking on the road beside the hawthorn hedge set at right angles to the river.

Methods: The shallow upper section, streamer weed and deeper downstream water give you a few swims to weigh up. Trotting or feeder work may suit the contrasting depths, but the pegs need substantial work and the section is currently described as neglected.

The club doesn't list species for this stretch, so we haven't guessed.

Key rules

  • SAC membership is required; day tickets are not provided.
  • A valid Environment Agency rod licence is required, and anglers must carry their SAC membership card.
  • Juniors under 16 may fish free only on the same swim as a fully paid member, with one junior maximum per member.
  • When a junior fishes with a member, a maximum of three rods applies jointly. Otherwise, the maximum is two rods per angler.
  • Rods must not be left unattended.
  • Fish must be returned safely to the club waters.
  • Unhooking mats are required for barbel, chub, bream and pike.
  • Littering, fires, vandalism, unsafe fixed-lead death rigs and careless fishing are prohibited. Wading is allowed subject to personal safety.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
