Stonehenge Fishery

Plan a session

Stonehenge Fishery is a peaceful, classic shallow chalk-stream beat on the River Avon near Durrington and West Amesbury. It’s a members-first game fishery, with wild brown trout and grayling, a handy adjacent car park and plenty of wading water.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Amesbury on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • This is roughly 600 metres of proper rural Avon water, despite being close to Durrington and the Stonehenge area. Quiet, open and very chalk-streamy.
  • The lower 200 metres can be fished from the bank. The rest of the beat may be waded, with depths normally running from knee-deep to waist-deep.
  • Expect the usual chalk-stream mix of riffles and smooth glides. It’s the sort of water where reading the crease and spotting a rise can matter more than lobbing miles.
  • The fishery is wild and non-stocked. The club reports a good head of brown trout and grayling, with more than 600 fish caught from 287 visits in the 2014 monitoring year.
  • Fly life includes olives, mayflies and cased caddis. That gives the stretch plenty of seasonal interest, especially when the river has a bit of hatch activity.
  • This is managed as a game-fishing beat, not a coarse-fishing venue. Think fly tackle and careful wading rather than feeder work or a big box of bait.
  • Wading is possible over much of the beat, but only when conditions are safe and in line with club rules. Chalk streams can look friendly, so don’t get too cheeky in stronger water.
  • Only four members can fish the stretch at one time, which should help keep things calm. Members may also take one non-fishing guest.
  • The adjacent car park makes access a fair bit less of a faff than on many rural chalk-stream beats. The fishery is close to Durrington and West Amesbury, with Stonehenge nearby.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: This is a fly-fishing job on shallow chalk-stream water, with the riffles, glides and hatch activity worth concentrating on. Keep the approach tidy, wade carefully and make the most of olives, mayflies and cased caddis.
