We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is proper Lower Severn stuff — deep, wide water with a big-river feel rather than a tiny intimate stream.
  • The stretch sits on the eastern side of the Severn near Severn Stoke village, with floodplain and levee country around the riverbank.
  • The river is known for prevalent bream, chub and roach, with pike also present. Barbel are noted as growing to record size.
  • That mix gives you plenty to aim at when the water is fishable again — feeder work for bream, roach and chub, or a more focused barbel approach when conditions line up.
  • Big rivers can change character quickly. Keep an eye on colour and flow, and look for steadier water, the crease and any quieter edges rather than blindly fishing the main push.
  • The access route is via Ham Lane, reached from the A38 at the Severn Stoke war memorial. The BAA car park is right at the end of Ham Lane.
  • The official access postcode is WR8 9JP. Car-park coordinates are 52.098447, -2.22196, handy for getting the sat-nav sorted before loading the gear.
  • There is no published fishable length or peg count, so expect to find your swim on the day rather than working to a numbered-peg plan.
  • For now, though, this one is a no-go. Fishing access is suspended, and the fishery page says there is currently no safe access to the water.
  • The works were expected to be completed by mid-July, but the fishery page gives no year, so check the current BAA position before setting off.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: When access reopens, the deep, wide river should suit feeder fishing for bream, roach and chub, with barbel and pike offering more specialised targets. Read the flow, find a comfortable crease or steadier edge, and keep things simple.

Key rules

  • BAA members only.
  • Membership must be obtained directly from Birmingham Anglers Association Limited.
  • Membership cards must be carried when fishing BAA waters.
  • Night fishing is prohibited.
  • Fishing access is currently suspended because of Environment Agency flood-relief works.
  • There is currently no safe access to the water; check the current position before travelling.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
