Wild Pheasant Hotel to Town Bridge

Plan a session

A cracking bit of the Dee around Llangollen, running from the Wild Pheasant Hotel down to Town Bridge. It’s mainly trout and grayling water, with deeper channels, Top Rock and the park offering a cheeky chance of salmon too.

River level

River level integration coming for this stretch.

My River Watch isn't available here — we haven't matched a level gauge to this stretch, and we won't guess one.

The lowdown

  • This is a proper varied lower-Dee stretch, with rocky runs, glides, deeper channels, pools and urban-riverside water all packed into the beat.
  • The stretch runs from the Wild Pheasant Hotel to Llangollen Town Bridge, right in and around Llangollen.
  • The opposite bank, from Llangollen railway station to just beyond Jenny Jones Island, is available for trout and grayling fishing.
  • That opposite-bank section is described for fly or worm fishing, so there’s a bit of flexibility depending on river height and colour.
  • Top Rock and the deeper channels through the park can produce salmon. Two salmon runs are reported above the Jenny Jones tunnel access.
  • Access is available along the promenade from Llangollen Bridge, with another route in from the Park Avenue housing estate.
  • The Dee here is mostly trout and grayling water from the A5 side. Expect plenty of variation in pace, depth and riverbed rather than one uniform canal-like run.
  • The Llangollen section map identifies pools and access points, plus some fly-fishing-only trout water and no-fishing sections. Have a proper look before setting up.
  • The map also flags vehicle etiquette: don’t block farm gates or private drives. A small thing, but it saves a proper faff for everyone.
  • Summer and autumn can be busy, although nearby access arrangements leave some evening periods free. Check the local rules before fishing late, as no night-fishing permission is stated for this exact stretch.

Methods: Fly or worm fishing suits the trout and grayling water, while salmon opportunities are noted around Top Rock and the deeper park channels. Read the flow, find the crease and make the most of the rocky runs and pools.

Key rules

  • An NRW rod licence is required.
  • Check the detailed Llangollen section map for marked no-fishing sections.
  • Some areas are fly-fishing-only trout water.
  • Do not obstruct farm gates or private drives.
  • The association’s general rules and Natural Resources Wales angling regulations apply.
  • Check local rules before fishing after dark, as night-fishing permission is not stated for this stretch.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
