The lowdown
- This is Beat 1 of roughly four miles of East Burton Estate water, split across nine beats. Handy enough, it starts at the cattle bridge and finishes where the North Stream carrier joins the Frome.
- Fishing is from the left-hand bank only. Wading is often recommended, so expect to get your boots wet when flows and conditions allow.
- The beat has a nice change of pace, with deeper pools sitting alongside shallower gravel runs. That gives you water to pick apart rather than one long, uniform glide.
- Standard 8ft–9ft rods are stated as suitable. A tidy setup for working the runs and covering the pools without bringing a whole tackle shop.
- The estate says the river holds wild trout, while the main river is sometimes stocked with brown trout. Grayling are plentiful, including fish over three pounds.
- Salmon and sea trout can be fly fished for in the hatch pools and runs. That gives the beat a proper game-fishing feel when those fish are in the river.
- For trout, the season runs from 1 April to 15 October. Grayling fishing is available from 16 October to 14 March, so there’s a useful change of target through the year.
- The estate doesn’t give a Beat 1-specific rod limit. Across the full four miles, fishing parties can be catered for with up to eight rods, with possible river exclusivity.
- Parking is available at the start of Beat 1, but park off the track so estate workers can get through. River guides and coaches can also be organised if you fancy a bit of help reading the water.
Methods: This is fly water, with trout, salmon and sea trout fly fished for in the relevant pools and runs. Bring an 8ft–9ft rod and be ready for a bit of wading through the deeper pools and gravel runs.

Rigs & methods
- Typical approach, not confirmed at this stretch
Fly fishing to the flow
River trout hold where food is delivered by the current. Most trout waters are fly-only — check the rights holder's rules first.
How to set it up
- Upstream nymph or dry fly in the riffles and glides.
- Approach from downstream and keep low.
Typical kit: Rod: 8–9ft #4–5 · Tippet: light fluorocarbon or copolymer. Starting points only — match line and hook to the venue rules and the fish present.
Bait to consider
- Flies only on most trout waters — check the lodge rules
- Bait/worm ONLY where expressly permitted
Common starting baits, not a local "top bait". Bait bans override everything here.
When it suits
Depends on the water's season and stocking — ask the lodge what's open.
General seasonal pattern, not a forecast.
