The lowdown
- This is one of nine beats spread across the estate’s four miles of River Frome. Beat Four is long, roomy and suits a couple of rods nicely.
- It’s double-bank water, although anglers are advised to fish mainly from the left-hand bank. That’s the side to start with.
- The standout feature is the number of deep runs. Expect proper holding water rather than just skinny little trickles.
- Entry and exit points are easily accessible, which is bob on if you fancy covering plenty of water with a bit of wading.
- The estate specifically says Beat Four suits anglers who like to wade. There’s enough room to explore the runs rather than standing in one spot all day.
- Early season is well worth a look, with the estate saying the beat will often produce an early-season salmon. Salmon are in season from 15 March to 31 August.
- Trout fishing runs from 1 April to 15 October. The waters hold wild brown trout, with the main river sometimes stocked with brown trout too.
- Salmon and sea trout can be fished for in the hatch pools and runs. Those deeper features are the obvious places to concentrate your efforts.
- Parking is shared with Beat Three. The estate also provides an interactive Google beat map, handy for finding the fishing and planning your way in and out.
- River guides and coaches can be organised through the estate, which could be a cracking option if you want help reading the Frome or covering the deeper water properly.
Methods: This is a wading-focused river beat, with deep runs, hatch pools and plenty of water to explore. Fly-fishing guidance, river guides and coaches can be organised through the estate.

Rigs & methods

Fly fishing to the flow
River trout hold where food is delivered by the current. Most trout waters are fly-only — check the rights holder's rules first.
How to set it up
- Upstream nymph or dry fly in the riffles and glides.
- Approach from downstream and keep low.
Typical kit: Rod: 8–9ft #4–5 · Tippet: light fluorocarbon or copolymer. Starting points only — match line and hook to the venue rules and the fish present.
Bait to consider
- Flies only on most trout waters — check the lodge rules
- Bait/worm ONLY where expressly permitted
Common starting baits, not a local "top bait". Bait bans override everything here.
When it suits
Depends on the water's season and stocking — ask the lodge what's open.
