The lowdown

  • This is a right-bank-only stretch, running down to Wool Bridge, which marks the downstream boundary of the East Burton Estate water.
  • The beat is shared with Beat Five for parking, with extra space in the lay-by off the main road at the start of Beat Six.
  • Expect deep glides and sweeping bends rather than a tiny, fiddly stream. The water has the character for salmon, with hatch pools and runs available for salmon and sea trout.
  • For trout, the estate advertises upstream dry-fly and nymph fishing. A cracking option when the river is carrying a decent head and the fish are looking up.
  • The main river has good wild trout fishing, though the estate sometimes stocks the main river with brown trout. So there’s a mix of natural-looking water and occasional stocked fish.
  • Grayling are plentiful across the estate waters, including some proper lumps over three pounds. The published coarse and grayling season runs from 16 October to 14 March.
  • Salmon and sea trout are fished with down-and-across trout-fly tactics. Keep an eye on the hatch pools and runs, especially when conditions give the river a bit of life.
  • The trout season is 1 April to 15 October, while the salmon season runs from 15 March to 31 August. Fishing starts at dawn and finishes one hour after sunset.
  • All fish must be returned. Barbless or de-barbed hooks and a knotless landing net are required, so get that kit sorted before heading off.
  • There is no separate Beat Six rod limit, wading rule or ghillie requirement published. The wider estate can take up to eight rods for fishing parties, with complete river exclusivity available by arrangement.

Methods: Upstream dry fly and nymphing are advertised for trout. Salmon and sea trout are fished down-and-across with trout flies.

Rigs & methods

  • Typical approach, not confirmed at this stretch

    Fly fishing to the flow

River trout hold where food is delivered by the current. Most trout waters are fly-only — check the rights holder's rules first.

    How to set it up
    • Upstream nymph or dry fly in the riffles and glides.
    • Approach from downstream and keep low.

Typical kit: Rod: 8–9ft #4–5 · Tippet: light fluorocarbon or copolymer. Starting points only — match line and hook to the venue rules and the fish present.

Bait to consider

  • Flies only on most trout waters — check the lodge rules
  • Bait/worm ONLY where expressly permitted

Common starting baits, not a local "top bait". Bait bans override everything here.

When it suits

Depends on the water's season and stocking — ask the lodge what's open.
