Chesters Trout Beat

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is a famous North Tyne beat around Chollerford, with the Hadrian’s Wall landscape making a pretty smart backdrop.
- The stretch runs from Lone Tree at Upper Island downstream to Hodley Banks, taking in the water towards Walwick Grange.
- There’s a good mix of fast streams and holding pools, so look for trout tucked out of the push and in the softer edges.
- The Passport covers both banks, giving you a bit more room to work the water and find where the fish are sitting.
- Brown trout are the named species here, and the Trust describes the beat as having good stocks. Bob on for a focused trout session.
- It’s fly fishing only, with the available trout period running from 22 March to 30 April inclusive.
- Wading needs care. A stick and buoyancy aid are recommended, especially where the flow picks up below the weir and through the faster water.
- The maximum is four anglers, which should help keep the beat from feeling cramped. Give salmon anglers way as required.
- Park at Upper Hut, Waterside, park considerately, and close every gate behind you. Dogs, picnics and litter aren’t allowed.
- For a handy post-session brew or bite, The George in Chollerford has food. Chesters Estate also has bed-and-breakfast accommodation.
Methods: Fly fishing only. Work the fast streams and holding pools carefully, staying mobile and taking plenty of care when wading.
