We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is proper scenic Northumberland water, tucked into the forest country around Kielder. Kielder Castle overlooks the burn and the North Tyne, so the setting is bob on.
- The beat runs from the wall at the entrance to Scaup Farm down to the Deadwater Burn confluence. That’s listed as 4 km, also described as roughly 6 miles of water.
- It’s a varied little burn rather than one steady channel. Expect fordable shallows broken up by deeper pools, with moderate wading rather than anything too heroic.
- The main target is genuinely wild brown trout. Typical fish are around 12 oz, with trout to about 1 lb possible. Small, lively fish and a proper wild feel.
- There’s a varied fly life, including a mayfly hatch. When the hatch is on, a light fly approach should be well worth having in the bag.
- Fly and worm are allowed up to 31 July, giving you a bit of flexibility early in the season. From August and September, it’s fly only.
- The season runs from 22 March to 30 September. Early and late in the season, keep an eye on the water and work the deeper pools; in summer, the fly life comes into its own.
- Give the weir a wide berth: fishing is off-limits for 50 metres above and below it. Don’t be tempted to sneak into the exclusion zone.
- Access is via the brown Kielder Castle tourist sign from Reservoir Road/C200. Parking is available at Kielder Castle or East Kielder car park.
- There’s no stated maximum number of anglers. The burn is covered on both banks, so spread out, read the crease and keep the approach tidy on this compact upland water.
Methods: Start with a light fly outfit, covering the glides, pool edges and any obvious hatch activity. Worm is permitted until 31 July, but from August onwards it’s fly only.
