Durrington Fishery – River Avon

Durrington Fishery is a tidy little 300-metre Upper Avon stretch just south of River Park recreation ground. It’s open, easy to cast on, and has a proper wading section at the bottom of the beat.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Amesbury on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • This is a cracking bit of the Avon on the edge of Durrington, with fishing on both banks. Handy if you like a bit of choice rather than being pinned to one side.
  • Most of the stretch has no trees or shrubs behind you, so casting is generally straightforward. Less faff, more fishing — bob on for trotting or a light feeder approach.
  • The water normally runs from mid-calf to waist deep. That makes it wadeable in the right conditions, but do keep an eye on the flow and footing.
  • At the bottom of the beat there’s a dedicated wading section. It gets good annual ranunculus growth, so expect proper river character rather than a bare, featureless channel.
  • The fishery sits immediately below a private trout fishery that regularly restocks. The stretch itself has a good head of brown trout, with grayling also present.
  • The club reckons it’s worthwhile in the early and late season. Those cooler, quieter periods should suit a stealthy wander and covering likely water rather than charging about.
  • Paths are maintained by a local residents group, which makes getting around the beat pretty straightforward. You’ll occasionally bump into dog-walkers too.
  • It’s generally tranquil outside the busy periods, but local children can fish between the white markers by any method. Expect more activity after school, at weekends and during the holidays.
  • Hot weather can bring extra recreational use as well, so a quieter early or late session is likely to be the better shout if you want the place to yourself.

Methods: Trotting and light feeder work should fit the open banks and moderate wading depth nicely. The wading section and ranunculus are the spots to concentrate on, especially in the early and late season.

Key rules

  • An Environment Agency rod licence is required.
  • Local children may fish between the white markers by any method.
  • Bailiffs operate in the area.
  • Children under 12 are listed as fishing free by the local council.
  • The nearby Avon Springs and Stonehenge fisheries are separate stretches.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
