A cracking run of River Witham beats around Grantham, with uncrowded, unspoilt water and naturally sustained brown trout and grayling. It’s proper fly-fishing country, with a notable Mayfly hatch and some brownies pushing 3lb or more.

The Tattershall stretch is Boston & District Angling Association water, running from Walcott pumping station to roughly 200 yards before Thorpe Tilney Lane. There are 50 pegs, including the reedy bay, with a proper mixed-species list headed by bream, perch, roach, rudd and tench.

White Horse Fishery is a cracking mile of middle-Avon water below Downton’s white-painted Iron Bridge. It’s a proper mixed stretch, with chub now ruling the roost, plus roach, dace, perch and some tasty winter pike sport.

Heale Estate offers a proper chalk-stream beat on the upper Hampshire Avon at Middle Woodford, with around 2.5 miles of main river, carriers and parkland water around Heale House. It’s mainly fly fishing for brown trout and good numbers of grayling, with the Broads Beat and House Beat making up the fishery.

Finding somewhere to fish near you

Every listing tells you the stuff you actually need before you load the car: what's in each lake or stretch, whether it's a day ticket, club or syndicate water, the house rules and what a ticket costs when we last checked. Rules and prices change, so always give the fishery or club a quick shout before you go.

Rivers, canals and stillwaters fish completely differently. Lakes reward a bit of watercraft and steady feeding; rivers are all about flow, depth and level, so we show live river levels where we can. Use the water-type and fish filters to narrow it down, then open a venue for the lake-by-lake or stretch-by-stretch lowdown.
