Duncan's Pool to Pendre

A cracking upper Dee beat from Duncan’s Pool to Pendre, run by Llangollen Maelor Angling. It’s a varied bit of river with salmon pools, plus trout and grayling water from both banks.

River level

River level integration coming for this stretch.

My River Watch isn't available here — we haven't matched a level gauge to this stretch, and we won't guess one.

The lowdown

  • The stretch runs between Duncan’s Pool and Pendre, with access from the A5 side and the opposite bank.
  • Access points are marked C and D on the A5 side, with F and G across the river. Handy enough, so long as gates and access are kept clear.
  • Holly Bush Pool is the headline salmon water. It can be fished from both banks up to Pendre, with fly or spinning allowed for salmon.
  • The Pipe, Sycamore Run and Pendre channels are also picked out as salmon pools. Proper names to keep in mind when you’re working through the beat.
  • The upper section gives trout and grayling fishing from both banks. Upstream of the Chain Bridge Hotel, trout and grayling fishing is fly only.
  • Spinning for trout and grayling is banned at all times, so don’t pack the lures for that job. Salmon anglers have priority throughout.
  • There’s a four-fish daily limit for trout and grayling combined. Only two can be grayling, and they must be within the permitted 30–38 cm range.
  • Trout under 25.5 cm go straight back. Salmon, salmon parr and smolts must all be returned, with salmon released as quickly as possible.
  • No night fishing is allowed, apart from sea trout. Keep at least 20 yards from other anglers and move steadily downstream through the pools.
  • It’s fishing at your own risk. No dogs, and camping, fires, shooting, canoeing or boat launching need executive-board permission. Don’t cut trees, undergrowth or weeds.

Methods: Fly fishing is the go-to for trout and grayling, while the Holly Bush Pool can be tackled for salmon with fly or spinning. Salmon anglers get priority, and trout or grayling spinning is prohibited.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
