We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Ashbrook on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • This is a named WDAA length on the River Weaver, tucked into Weaver Parkway in Winsford. The association has controlled it since 1908.
  • There are 48 pegs, numbered 113 to 160. Plenty of choice, though match bookings can mean being asked to move, so keep an eye on the current arrangements.
  • The river has a canalised, navigable feel. It can be surprisingly deep tight to the bank, so don’t assume the margin is shallow or simple.
  • Old bankings from the area’s former salt industry give the place a bit of character. Proper visible history, rather than just a featureless cut.
  • Bream shoals are present and can show more strongly into the evening. Keep an eye out for signs of fish settling over the feed.
  • Carp pass through the stretch. WDAA recommends pellets or boilies, and passing barges are worth watching carefully when fishing multiple rods or aiming at carp.
  • Roach, perch, tench, pike and occasional large eels are also named for the water. There’s a decent mix to keep things interesting.
  • The section is popular with walkers, dogs and cyclists. Don’t set up on the public path, and expect a bit of activity around you.
  • Access is from the rear of the Red Lion pub, with extra access from car parks near the Rangers Office on Weaver Valley Road. A trolley or barrow is strongly advised.
  • Fishing is listed from June 16 to March 15, while the waters overview gives March 14 as the close-season end. Check the current permit information before heading out. Up to 48 hours of night fishing is allowed, but it must be booked through the association website.

Methods: Trotting, feeder work and sensible margin fishing are all worth considering, with bream showing more in the evening. For carp, pellets or boilies are the association’s recommended starting point, but keep barges in mind when using multiple rods.
