Fishwick Bottoms is the Ribble Free Stretch near Preston and Walton-le-Dale. It’s a broad, lowland floodplain reach with free fishing, but you’ll still need the appropriate Environment Agency rod licence.

Farnley Estate’s River Tyne beat sits near Corbridge in Northumberland, with fishing arranged along the Farnley bank. It’s a peaceful, well-kept salmon beat with a wild feel, a sequence of named pools and space for three rods.

Grindleton and Sawley is Ribblesdale Angling Association water on the River Ribble, with three pools on one bank. It’s mainly a game-fishing venue, with two pools geared to fly fishing and one better suited to spinning and bait.

A cracking near-four-mile stretch of the Ribble at Grindleton, controlled by Clitheroe Angling Association. It’s mostly double-bank and strictly fly-only, with brown trout, a decent head of grayling, plus salmon and sea trout interest.

Horton in Ribblesdale Fishery

A cracking, roughly 12-mile stretch of the River Ribble, running from Gearstones down to Helwith Bridge beneath Pen-y-ghent and near Ribblehead Viaduct. It’s Manchester Anglers’ Association water, mainly wild brown trout country with the occasional salmon.

Hothersall Beat

Hothersall is a cracking member-only beat on the Ribble, with just over a mile and a quarter of pools, runs and recognised salmon-taking spots. There’s plenty of variety too, from the big Island Pool to streamier water holding trout and sea trout.

Bywell to Ovingham, River Tyne

A proper scenic Tyne valley stretch running from Bywell through Bywell Bridge towards Ovingham, with both north- and south-bank sections on the Federation map. The lower Bywell addition is about a mile long and is north-bank only, with its own salmon-permit and reporting requirements.

A proper long run of managed game water, stretching from just below Witton-le-Wear down to Croxdale outside Durham City. It sits within Bishop Auckland District Angling Club’s wider River Wear beat system, with named pools and rural Wear scenery along the way.

Long Preston Beat (Mid-Ribble Angling Society)

Long Preston Beat is a cracking bit of upper Ribble water on the left bank, forming part of the Long Preston Deeps. It looks like one long pool, but is actually four connected pools, with migratory fish gathering here later in the season.

Low Moor / Ribblesdale Pool is a proper mixed-species River Ribble stretch on the south bank, immediately behind Ribblesdale Pool in Clitheroe. It’s part of the council’s large fishable stretch through town, with council permits required alongside an Environment Agency rod licence.

Willow Tree Island

Willow Tree Island is a proper secluded little venue on the River Great Ouse at Offord, with fishing on both the main river and a deep back stream. It’s LAA water, with around 30 swims and a cracking mix of roach, chub, bream, tench and the odd bigger surprise.

Kielder Burn Beat

A cracking upland brown-trout beat on Kielder Burn, run through the Tyne Angling Passport by Tyne Rivers Trust. Both banks are included, with wild trout, fordable shallows, deeper pools and a mayfly hatch to keep things interesting.

Chester-le-Street & District Angling Club lower River Wear beats

The lower River Wear beats around Chester-le-Street are the club’s first accessible non-tidal water, with pools, runs and gravelly bits aimed at migratory and resident game fish. It’s urban in places, but still a proper bit of Wear with salmon and sea-trout water in the mix.

A proper Fenland low-flow venue run by Welney Angling Club, covering the Old Bedford River and River Delph around Welney parish. Pike, zander and big carp are the headline draws, with plenty of classic coarse-fishing options too.

Ovingham and Prudhoe sit on the main Tyne, with roughly two miles of Northumberland Anglers Federation water to explore. It’s big, wild and properly picturesque, with early-season salmon and sea-trout fishing, plus cracking coarse sport when the river has a bit of colour.

Eden Lacy is a proper secluded River Eden beat near Lazonby and Great Salkeld, with 1.8 miles of left-bank fishing and 15 named pools. It’s fly fishing only, booked by the day and by rod through FishEden or FishPal.

Knight Stainforth Farm / Caravan Park is a Settle Anglers’ Association stretch on the right-hand, west bank of the River Ribble. It runs from below Stainforth Packhorse Bridge down to the existing Robin Hoods Wood fishing, with the Foss Pool off-limits.

Long Preston is a proper Ribble game-fishing beat run by Bowland Game Fishing Association, with the inspected upper section sitting between Stainforth and Long Preston Beck. There’s slower deep water, varied river habitat and some cracking floodplain-shaped features around the Long Preston Deeps.

Finding somewhere to fish near you
Type a town, county or fish into the box up top — something like “Nottingham”, “carp Nottinghamshire” or “day ticket River Trent” — and we'll pull up the waters we've checked nearest that spot. Around Nottingham, for example, you'll find canal stretches, the tidal-free middle Trent and plenty of commercial lakes within a short drive.
Every listing tells you the stuff you actually need before you load the car: what's in each lake or stretch, whether it's a day ticket, club or syndicate water, the house rules and what a ticket costs when we last checked. Rules and prices change, so always give the fishery or club a quick shout before you go.
Rivers, canals and stillwaters fish completely differently. Lakes reward a bit of watercraft and steady feeding; rivers are all about flow, depth and level, so we show live river levels where we can. Use the water-type and fish filters to narrow it down, then open a venue for the lake-by-lake or stretch-by-stretch lowdown.
