Sand Hole Beat, River Dee

Sand Hole Beat is a cracking lower-Dee spot run by Llangollen Maelor Angling. It’s got proper grayling and trout sport, with spinning, bait fishing and Czech nymphing all in the mix.

River level

River level integration coming for this stretch.

My River Watch isn't available here — we haven't matched a level gauge to this stretch, and we won't guess one.

The lowdown

  • Sand Hole sits in the association’s named lower-section River Dee areas, with Llangollen the nearest well-known settlement.
  • This is a natural spate river, so conditions can change quickly. A bit of colour and extra flow can really get the fish on the munch, but keep an eye on the river.
  • The lower beat has coarse fishing for dace, chub, roach and pike, giving you something different from the classic Dee trout and grayling game.
  • Grayling and trout are the headline act here. Sand Hole is described as very good for both on dry fly, so lighter tackle and neat presentation are bob on when the river settles.
  • Czech nymphing is specifically mentioned for Sand Hole. Handy when the fish are hugging the crease or sitting down in the deeper runs.
  • Spinning and bait fishing are also allowed at this area, making it a more flexible beat than a purely fly-focused stretch.
  • The wider Llangollen section is scenic, steep-sided and largely wooded. Expect a proper river setting rather than an open, easy-access canal-style bank.
  • Pool etiquette matters. Join from the top, move downstream steadily, leave at least 20 yards between anglers and never cast across someone else.
  • Salmon anglers have priority at all times. Parking and access must follow the association’s beat maps and instructions, so don’t just wing it on the day.
  • It’s a tidy option for a mixed Dee session, but keep the Natural Resources Wales rules close and carry your ticket or membership card while fishing.

Methods: Dry fly for trout and grayling is the standout approach, with Czech nymphing for deeper or less obliging fish. Spinning and bait fishing are also specifically mentioned for Sand Hole, while the lower beat offers coarse sport for dace, chub, roach and pike.

Key rules

  • Fishing must comply with Natural Resources Wales regulations, and a Natural Resources Wales rod licence is required.
  • Carry your membership card or day ticket while fishing and show it if requested by an authorised bailiff.
  • Do not deliberately foul-hook salmon or sea trout. All salmon caught must be returned quickly to the water.
  • Do not cut trees, undergrowth or weeds except during authorised work parties or with approval.
  • Join pools from the top and move downstream steadily.
  • Remain at least 20 yards apart and do not cast across another angler.
  • Salmon anglers have priority at all times.
  • Follow the association’s published beat maps and instructions for access and parking.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
