Upper Hill Court
Upper Hill Court gives you roughly a mile of River Wye fishing on the left bank, a couple of miles downstream of Ross-on-Wye. It’s a proper Fishing Passport beat, with wild early-summer water and more accessible, productive fishing in winter.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The beat is split into two main sections, so there’s a fair bit of water to explore rather than everyone piling into one short run.
- Access is variable. Some pegs are nicely marked, while other swims are more of a faff to reach.
- The upper section has vehicle access right to the river bank, which is handy when you’ve got a barrow or a mountain of tackle.
- The lower section is about 50 metres from the parking area. Not miles, but worth knowing before bringing every bit of kit you own.
- Early summer can feel properly wild here. Expect some swims to be less straightforward and take a bit of finding.
- Winter is described as the more accessible and productive period, so that’s a cracking time to get familiar with the beat.
- Specimen barbel have been caught on the stretch. Look for the crease, steadier glides and any deeper-looking water where the flow eases.
- There are only four coarse tickets available per day, which keeps pressure nicely limited and gives the water a less crowded feel.
- The official page identifies this as coarse fishing and specifically mentions barbel. It doesn’t give a full fish list, so don’t read more into it than that.
- A dog is fine, but it must stay under control. In wet conditions, a dog spike is advised — a small bit of kit that could save a proper faff.
Methods: Barbel are the headline, so feeder tactics and careful presentation around the crease and steadier water look the sensible starting point. Maggots are allowed during the stated dispensation period, making them an option for a tidy coarse approach.
