White House

White House is a cracking mile of left-bank fishing on the Wye, tucked between Ross-on-Wye and Hereford. It’s mainly a coarse-water beat, with deep slow water up top, quicker stuff downstream and some proper salmon options too.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • You get roughly a mile of fishing on the left bank, with the beat running through a mix of river character rather than being all one pace.
  • The upstream end is deep and slow, ideal for settling in with a feeder or fishing a steady line where the water starts to push.
  • Downstream, things pick up nicely. The faster sections offer potential trotting water, and the Foundation describes the coarse fishing as excellent.
  • Barbel and chub are the main coarse attractions, with roach and dace also listed for the stretch. Pike, grayling and trout are present too.
  • There’s a pebble beach and a croy, plus croys and platforms that make access to some pools a good deal less of a faff.
  • The gravel riverbed means wading is relatively easy where needed. Still, pick your spots sensibly and keep an eye on the flow.
  • Salmon anglers have both fly-fishing and spinning opportunities. It’s a useful bit of variety when the river has a touch of colour or the coarse fish aren’t quite on the munch.
  • Warm weekends and bank holidays can bring heavy canoe traffic from 10am to 4pm. Early starts should make for a quieter session and fewer interruptions.
  • The stretch is private, with day tickets booked through the Wye & Usk Foundation Fishing Passport. Only four tickets are available per day, and block bookings can be arranged.
  • Dogs are welcome under control, but professional instructors and guides need permission beforehand. Unauthorised guides may be asked to leave, and the beat operates a wash-off policy.

Methods: Trotting should suit the faster downstream water, while feeder or other coarse approaches look well matched to the deeper, slower upper section. Salmon can be targeted with fly or spinning.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
