Devil's Water – Swallowship Beat

Plan a session

Swallowship is a cracking 1.6 km Devil’s Water beat, running from Linnels Bridge down to the wood at West Haugh. It’s proper varied water, with haughland, pools, rocky bits and a steep-sided wooded canyon — all fly-only and full catch and release.

Run by Tyne Rivers Trust · checked 15 Oct 2026

River level

River level integration coming for this stretch.

My River Watch isn't available here — we haven't matched a level gauge to this stretch, and we won't guess one.

The lowdown

  • This is the north bank only — the holder calls it the left bank — so keep yourself on the right side of the river, literally.
  • The beat starts at Linnels Bridge and finishes at the edge of the wood at West Haugh. About 1.6 km of water gives you plenty to explore.
  • Expect a real mix underfoot and in the flow, from gravel banks to a rock floor. Wading is described as easy to moderate in places.
  • There are open haughland sections for a more comfortable cast, plus pools and rocky water where the current starts to work a bit harder.
  • The steep-sided wooded canyon is the big feature. It sits roughly 750 m downstream of the beat start, so don’t wander into it casually.
  • The holder recommends experienced anglers beyond the canyon hazard. Sensible stuff — take care and don’t bite off more than the river gives you.
  • Brown trout are the main named quarry. Sea trout and salmon are only occasionally present, so treat those as a cheeky bonus rather than the plan.
  • It’s fly fishing only, with full catch and release. The listed brown-trout season is 22 March to 30 September.
  • Sea-trout fishing runs from 3 April to 31 October, while the salmon season is 1 February to 31 October. Check the beat rules before setting off.
  • There’s a maximum of two anglers. Park in the layby on the north side of Linnels Bridge, then find the beat box about 20 yards inside the field on the banktop.

Methods: Fly fishing only, with the varied pools, rocky sections and changing flow calling for a tidy, mobile approach. Take extra care around the canyon, especially beyond the first 750 m.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
