We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Chollerford on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • This is approximately 1.8 km of the Erring Burn, a tributary of the North Tyne, with fishing on the north bank only.
  • The beat runs from the A68 road bridge upstream to the fence line opposite Keepwick Mill ruin downstream. Handy boundaries, so no faffing about.
  • Expect alternating vegetated and open sections, plus deep pools and fast, narrow riffles. Proper little burn fishing rather than chucking at a featureless channel.
  • It’s described as challenging water. The fish won’t necessarily be queuing up, so keep things tidy and make each cast count.
  • There’s little call for wading, which is bob on, but beware the deep holes. Don’t go charging in just because the water looks shallow elsewhere.
  • This is wild trout water. Brown trout are the main game, with occasional sea trout and salmon possibly present.
  • Fly only, and catch and release is required. Keep the approach light and sneaky, especially around the quieter pools and vegetated edges.
  • The brown-trout season is 22 March to 30 September inclusive. Two anglers is the maximum on the beat, so it should never feel rammed.
  • Parking is in the farmyard. From there, follow the fenceline parallel to the A68 south to reach the burn.
  • There’s a pub and burger van roughly three miles south on the A68. Handy for a cheeky post-session brew and bite.

Methods: Fly fishing only, with a quiet, careful approach to the pools, riffles and vegetated margins. There’s little need to wade, so work the water from the bank and take care around the deep holes.
