Erring Burn – Chollerton Farm
A cracking little brown-trout beat on the Erring Burn at Chollerton Farm, tucked into the North Tyne Valley beneath Hadrian’s Wall. It’s fly-only, challenging water with deep pools, quick riffles and a proper mix of open and overgrown sections.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Chollerford on Live River Levels

The lowdown
- This is a 2.5 km beat on the Erring Burn, a tributary of the North Tyne, at Chollerton Farm.
- Fishing is from the right bank when facing downstream — effectively the north bank only. Keep to that side.
- The upstream limit is the fence line opposite Keepwick Mill ruin. Downstream, the beat finishes at Chollerton Viaduct.
- The water alternates between vegetated bits and more open sections, so there’s a fair bit to pick apart.
- Expect deep pools and fast, narrow riffles. It’s not a chuck-it-anywhere sort of venue; picking the crease matters.
- The official description calls the fishing challenging, which sounds about bob on for a small burn with changing pace and depth.
- There’s little call for wading, so stay bank-based where possible. Still, beware the deep holes — they’re not to be taken lightly.
- It’s brown-trout fishing only, available from 22 March to 30 September. Full catch and release applies throughout.
- Fly fishing only. Keep things tidy and quiet, especially around the vegetated sections where a cheeky trout may be tucked away.
- The maximum is two anglers, making this a quiet, focused session rather than a crowded day on the bank. Parking is behind the old station cottages in Chollerton village, with room for two cars maximum.
Methods: Fly fishing only, working the alternating riffles, pools and vegetated edges carefully. There’s little need for wading, so fish from the bank and take extra care around the deep holes.
