We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Bellingham on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • This is a rural Redesdale stretch on the River Rede, one of the major tributaries of the North Tyne. Proper open country stuff.
  • The upstream limit is the cafe at Rochester, with the beat finishing downstream at Stobbs Farm road bridge. Handy, clear boundaries.
  • It’s predominantly open and fast flowing, so expect plenty of pace and a bit of water to read. There’s a mix of easier water and more challenging bits.
  • Wading is described as moderate and fairly shallow. Still, take care in the quicker runs and pick your line sensibly.
  • An 8-foot-6-inch rod with a floating line is considered suitable in normal conditions. Bob on for covering the wild trout water.
  • Brown trout are the main draw, with sea trout and salmon occasionally present. All fishing is fly only and catch and release applies.
  • The River Rede has a regulated flow, so conditions can change. A touch of colour or extra push could alter which glides and runs fish best.
  • Brown-trout fishing runs from 22 March to 30 September. Sea-trout fishing runs from 3 April to 31 October.
  • Salmon fishing is available from 1 February to 31 October. Check the relevant season before setting off, especially if targeting a particular species.
  • Parking is at Brigantium car park, with refreshments available at Camien Cafe in Rochester. Follow the beat rules and park considerately — no faff needed.

Methods: Fly fishing only, with an 8-foot-6-inch rod and floating line suitable in normal conditions. Work the open fast water, glides and runs, adjusting to the regulated flow and any extra push in the river.
